Lauren Moffatt joins the club at NFC Lisbon

The European Conference about NTFs, NFC Lisbon, was all about art this year. It is one of the most expected events of the year for tech and digital art lovers. During the June 7-9 event at Pavilhão Carlos Lopes, our 100 Collectors marked its presence by inviting Australian artist Lauren Moffatt to present her flourishing universe. For the occasion, she created two amazing pieces: an Augmented Reality work and a digital collage sold as NFT.

Lauren Moffatt believes we need to cultivate our imagination about possible ways to live in the world. Her immersive 3D spaces are like forests: enveloping, dense and enticing. Growing up halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, in a remote region in the mountains, Moffatt spent most of her childhood isolated with her family in the middle of nature. She found it far more challenging to connect with other humans than that of non-humans species. What surrounded her then and there is what she tries to create present-day in her works.

Titled “Reverse Dive: Local Knowledge, Partial Truth”, her Augmented Reality work made it possible for audiences of NFC Lisbon to look at a giant figure made of many varieties of flowers towering above viewers, altering the normal power structure between humans and plants. Petals and foliage float in space and sprout from the architecture, offering a fantastical immersion into possible human and non-human connectedness. Moffatt’s work wasn’t activated inside the technology saturated pavilion, but in its second natural habitat: outdoors in the famous Eduardo VII park, one of the most beautiful green areas in Lisbon.

For the NFC Lisbon program promoted by 100 Collectors, Moffatt also presented an NFT piece. “Compost IX” is a digital collage made by collaborating with nature, machine glitches and the transferral of painting into the virtual realm.

If nature and art are opposites? Not for Lauren Moffatt: “Art is more of a subjective feeling and technology is inventing new opportunities to create that feeling. I think it makes them more like collaborators that complement and nourish each other,” says the artist. Moffatt borrows us lenses to experience nature and technology through a unique point of view. What a pleasure for us - the 100 Collector’s team-, to promote and present her flourishing universe to our members!
